Registering at Your Local Health Centre, Costa Blanca
By Elia Living ·
Moving to the Costa Blanca North raises a question that national guides rarely answer: which health centre is actually yours, and what do you bring on the day? Here is a practical, town-by-town breakdown of how the public system is organised, the routes to a Tarjeta SIP, and what non-residents can access when they arrive.
How the System Is Organised
All of Costa Blanca North — Jávea, Dénia, Calpe, Benissa, Teulada, Moraira, Benitatxell and the surrounding Marina Alta municipalities — sits within one administrative unit: the Departamento de Salud de Dénia. It is part of the Comunitat Valenciana's public health network, the Servei Valencià de Salut (SVS), run by the Conselleria de Sanitat Universal i Salut Pública.
The district's main hospital is the Hospital Universitario de Dénia (also known as Hospital Marina Salud), where specialist and emergency care is centralised. Day-to-day primary care is handled by a network of centros de salud (full health centres) and smaller consultorios (satellite clinics). Your assigned centre depends on your registered home address, not your preferences.
Which Centre Serves Which Town
| Town / Area | Centre | Address | 24h Emergency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jávea old town | CS Jávea Pueblo (main) | Plaça de la Constitució, s/n | Yes |
| Jávea Port | CS Jávea Puerto | Av. del Botànic Cavanilles, 15 | No (weekday mornings) |
| Jávea Arenal | Consultorio Arenal | Av. de París, 18 | No (seasonal, Jun–Sep) |
| Dénia | CS Dénia / Hospital | Av. de la Marina Alta | Yes (A&E via hospital) |
| Calpe (Calp) | CSI Calp | — | — |
| Teulada | CS Teulada | C/ Doctor José Pitarch, s/n | Yes |
| Moraira | Consultorio Moraira | (administered by CS Teulada) | No |
| Benitatxell | (administered by CS Teulada) | — | No |
| Benissa | CS Benissa | C/ Ausias March, s/n | Yes |
Jávea's three-centre setup is unusually generous — residents in the old town, the port and the Arenal each have a local point of contact. In Moraira, the consultorio is a satellite of the Teulada health centre; most routine appointments happen in Teulada or, for anything specialist, Dénia. Benitatxell residents are similarly served via Teulada.
For a real-time address and phone lookup, the GVA health portal lets you search by home address to confirm which centre is assigned to your specific property: denia.san.gva.es. The Marina Alta booking line — 965 64 86 04 — covers appointments at any centre in the district.
Your Route to a Tarjeta SIP
The Tarjeta SIP is the Comunitat Valenciana's health card. It unlocks GP consultations, specialist referrals, hospital treatment and subsidised prescriptions. You cannot simply present it to a health centre and be seen; entitlement must first be established through one of the recognised routes below.
Working residents (employed or self-employed) Registering with the Spanish Social Security system (Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social, TGSS) gives you a Social Security number. Take that number, your NIE or TIE, and your padrón certificate to your assigned health centre; the SIP card follows automatically.
Pensioners with a UK or EU state pension (S1 form) If you receive a UK State Pension or most UK exportable benefits, you can obtain an S1 form from NHS Overseas Healthcare Services (UK: 0191 218 1999). Register it with the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social (INSS). The INSS will send you a Social Security number by post; take that document to your health centre to activate full SIP entitlement for you and any registered dependants — on exactly the same terms as a Spanish citizen.
Non-working residents (Convenio Especial) Residents who are neither working nor receiving a pension that covers an S1 — typically people on a Non-Lucrative Visa or early retirees — can pay into Spain's Convenio Especial scheme. You need to have been registered on the padrón for at least one year. The monthly contribution for those under 65 is approximately €60; prescription costs are not subsidised under this route. Apply at your local INSS office in Dénia or Alicante.
Long-term permanent residents (5+ years) After five years of legal residence, permanent EU or UK residents can request a letter from NHS Overseas Healthcare Services confirming entitlement, then register with the INSS and receive a SIP card with full subsidy.
What to Bring on the Day
Regardless of which route applies to you, the practical package to take to the health centre is:
- Passport (original and photocopy)
- NIE or TIE (your residency identification)
- Certificado de empadronamiento — the official padrón extract from your town hall, dated within the last three months
- INSS or Social Security document confirming your entitlement category
- S1 form (if applicable), before or in addition to INSS registration
The health centre staff assign you a GP (médico de cabecera), issue a temporary card on the spot if needed, and post the permanent Tarjeta SIP within a few weeks. There is also a digital version available through the GVA + Salut app, which is worth downloading once registered.
For Non-Residents and Holiday Homeowners
If you own a property on the Costa Blanca but spend only part of the year here — without being padrón-registered or on a SIP — the public system is not your primary access point.
UK nationals can use the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) for medically necessary state treatment during temporary visits. A GHIC is free and applied for through the NHS website. It is not a substitute for travel insurance and does not cover repatriation.
EU nationals continue to use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which gives the same temporary-visit access.
Neither card grants access to GP appointments for routine or chronic conditions; those require either private insurance or a qualifying residency route above. Urgencias (A&E) at Hospital Universitario de Dénia is open to all regardless of status — no one is turned away from emergency care.
For holiday homeowners who visit for extended periods, comprehensive private health insurance is widely available in Spain and generally considerably cheaper than equivalent UK or Northern European cover. It also satisfies the health-insurance requirement if you are applying for a long-stay visa.

Frequently asked questions
Which health centre serves Moraira? Moraira residents are registered under the Centro de Salud de Teulada (C/ Doctor José Pitarch, s/n). The Moraira consultorio handles routine appointments locally, but the full centre — including 24-hour urgent care — is in Teulada.
What is the Tarjeta SIP and do I need one to see a doctor? The Tarjeta SIP is the Valencian public health card. You need it — or proof of your registration in progress — to book GP appointments and access subsidised prescriptions in the Comunitat Valenciana. Emergency (A&E) treatment is available without it.
What documents do I need to register at my health centre? Bring your passport, your NIE or TIE, a recent padrón certificate from your Ayuntamiento, and the INSS confirmation of your Social Security number (issued after your entitlement is processed). S1 holders should also bring the S1 form itself when visiting the INSS.
I have a Non-Lucrative Visa and no Spanish income. Can I use public healthcare? Yes, through the Convenio Especial, once you have been on the padrón for at least 12 months. The monthly contribution is around €60 for under-65s. Apply at the INSS office in Dénia or Alicante. Note that NLV applicants must show private health insurance cover at the visa stage — the Convenio Especial replaces that private cover only after arrival and padrón registration.
Will my UK GHIC work in Jávea? Yes, for medically necessary treatment during temporary visits. Present it at the health centre or hospital as you would an EHIC. It does not give access to routine GP appointments and is not accepted as a substitute for travel insurance.
How do I find out exactly which centre covers my property address? Use the address-search tool on the GVA Sanitat portal at san.gva.es, or call the Marina Alta booking line on 965 64 86 04. The system assigns a centre (and a GP) based on your registered address, so if you move or register in a new area, your assignment will update accordingly.
